“Everything Need to Know About Parallel Parking”
Parallel parking is one of the most feared maneuvers for learner drivers in Western Sydney, but it doesn’t have to be. During your Service NSW practical driving test, the testing officer will look for control, accuracy, and legal observation.
At D-Tech Driver Training, we break down the parallel reverse park into a simple, stress-free formula that works every time—whether you are parking in the quiet streets of Richmond or the busier roads around Blacktown and Marsden Park.
The D-Tech 4-Step Parallel Parking Formula
1. The Setup & Signal
Pull up parallel to the vehicle in front of your parking space, leaving about 1 meter of space between your car and theirs. Align your rear bumper roughly with their rear bumper. Crucial Test Tip: Put your left indicator on early to show the testing officer (and traffic behind you) exactly what you plan to do.
2. The 360-Degree Check
Before you select reverse gear, look all around you. Check your rearview mirror, side mirrors, and physically look over your right shoulder to check your blind spot. Testing officers will fail a student who reverses without a proper safety check.
3. The Angle (45 Degrees)
Put the car in reverse, turn your steering wheel one full turn to the left, and slowly ease back until your car is at roughly a 45-degree angle to the kerb. You’ll know you’re there when the passenger-side mirror clears the rear bumper of the car next to you.
4. Straighten and Lock
Straighten your steering wheel as you slowly crawl backward. Once your front bumper clears the rear bumper of the parked car, lock the steering wheel to the right to swing the front of your car into place.
What the Testing Officer Looks For:
- Distance from the Kerb: Your car must finish parallel to the kerb and within 30cm to 50cm of it.
- Too Many Movements: You are allowed up to 1 correction (1 forward, 1 reverse movement) to finish the park. Don’t panic if you need to adjust!
- Hitting the Kerb: Hard mounting or bumping the kerb is a serious error. If you gently touch it, stop immediately, adjust, and don’t force it.
