Overview & Test Centre Details
The St Marys Service NSW testing registry connects high-flow multi-lane arterial corridors, bustling train and bus interchanges, narrow residential backstreets, and strictly enforced school zones.
- Registry Location: 75–105 Mamre Road, St Marys NSW 2760 (adjacent to the St Marys Diggers precinct).
- Testing Area: Dedicated Service NSW Driver Testing parking bays facing the main complex entrance.
- Key Landmarks: St Marys Diggers Club, Our Lady of the Rosary Primary Church & School, St Marys Train Station & Bus Interchange, Queen Street Shopping Precinct, and Great Western Highway (A44).
What Examiners Assess on Test Day
During your St Marys practical driving test, the testing officer evaluates your driving decisions across four core Low-Risk Driving competencies:
- Speed Management: Maintaining a safe, smooth speed appropriate to road conditions; strictly complying with 40 km/h school zones, 50 km/h residential zones, and 60 km/h multi-lane corridors.
- Road Positioning: Centering your vehicle in lanes, maintaining at least a 1-metre safety buffer from parked cars, and never touching or cutting across solid double continuous lines.
- Decision Making: Selecting safe gaps in traffic on Mamre Road and Great Western Highway, giving way correctly at single and multi-lane roundabouts, and yielding to pedestrians.
- Vehicle Control: Smooth, coordinated steering and braking, especially during low-speed manoeuvres and bay parking.
Pre-Drive Preparation at Service NSW St Marys
Your test begins the moment you meet your testing officer in the waiting area. Set yourself up for success before turning the ignition key:
- Park Rear-to-Kerb: When arriving before your test, reverse park into the nominated testing bay so you can drive forward out of the bay when departing. If possible, park past the pedestrian crossing in front of Service NSW to eliminate immediate pedestrian hazards.
- Scan Continuously: The car park experiences constant foot traffic. Perform a 360-degree observation scan and check both blind spots before releasing the handbrake.
- Walking Pace Departure: Keep your speed strictly under 10 km/h until your vehicle exits the car park driveway.
Section 1: Exiting Service NSW & Hall Street onto Mamre Road
Move slowly out of the testing bay, navigate the driveway, and bring the vehicle to a smooth stop at Hall Street. Turn left onto Hall Street, scan the intersection, and approach the Mamre Road junction.
Give way to all approaching traffic on Mamre Road. Turn left into the 60 km/h flow, and safely work your vehicle into the far-right lane early when clear to prepare for your upcoming right turn into Mitchell Street.

Section 2: Residential Manoeuvre Pocket (Mitchell, Monfarville & Morris)
Indicate right early, select a safe gap through oncoming traffic, and turn right into Mitchell Street. The speed limit immediately drops to the default suburban 50 km/h.
Keep a safe 1-metre cushion from parked vehicles. Turn left onto Monfarville Street, keeping centered between the double unbroken lines on your right and the kerb. Turn right onto Morris Street.
Examiners frequently use Mitchell, Monfarville, or Morris Streets to assess your Kerbside Stop or Reverse Parallel Park. Remember to indicate left for 5 seconds before pulling over, and indicate right for 5 seconds with a 360-degree blind-spot check before moving off.
Section 3: Parkin Road Loop & Three-Point Turn (Freeman Street)
At the end of Morris Street, yield to cross-traffic at the T-intersection, turn onto Marsden Road, and immediately take a left onto Carpenter Street.
Negotiate the single-lane roundabout on Carpenter Street smoothly. Turn right onto Parkin Road, then left onto Leonard Street. Examiners frequently use Freeman Street in this residential pocket to assess the Three-Point Turn.
Step-by-Step Three-Point Turn Execution:
- Pulling Over: Signal left for at least 5 seconds, check mirrors and your left shoulder blind spot, and stop parallel to the kerb.
- Scan & Signal: Indicate right for at least 3 seconds, select Drive, and complete a full 360-degree safety scan.
- Point 1 (Forward): Move forward at a walking pace steering smoothly to full right lock. Stop half a metre before the opposite kerb.
- Point 2 (Reverse): Select Reverse, complete another 360-degree check (looking over both shoulders), and reverse while steering firmly to full left lock.
- Point 3 (Drive Away): Select Drive, check traffic in both directions, straighten up in the left lane, and accelerate smoothly.
Parkin Road is narrow with parked trucks. Maintain vehicle control under 40 km/h and do not cut the corner across continuous double white lines when entering or exiting.

Section 4: Bennett Road, Great Western Highway & Glossop Street
Follow Carpenter Street to the traffic lights and turn right onto Bennett Road (50 km/h). Travel north toward the Great Western Highway, scanning for bus stops and side-street traffic.
Turn left onto the Great Western Highway (A44) into the 60 km/h corridor. Signal for at least 5 seconds, perform mirror and shoulder blind-spot checks, and work your way into the far-right turning bay for Glossop Street.
When entering the dual right-turn bay for Glossop Street, choose the left-most right-turn lane. This automatically positions your car into the correct left lane on Glossop Street, saving you an unnecessary lane change before your upcoming left turn onto Phillip Street.

Section 5: Phillip Street, Station Interchange & Queen Street Commercial Strip
Turn left from Glossop Street onto Phillip Street (50 km/h). Scan constantly for buses exiting the St Marys train station interchange and commuters using marked pedestrian crossings near active Metro construction works.
Negotiate the mini-roundabout and turn left onto Queen Street.
When a vehicle ahead is reverse parallel parking along Queen Street, do not swerve into oncoming traffic to overtake. Stop and wait patiently behind the vehicle. Swerving across into opposing traffic will cause an immediate test failure under Fail Item 7: Action Resulting in a Dangerous Situation.
Section 6: Mamre Road Return, School Zone, Speed Camera & Finish
Continue south along Queen Street as it crosses the Great Western Highway and flows directly into Mamre Road (60 km/h).
Passing Our Lady of the Rosary Primary Church and School, you will enter an active 40 km/h school zone monitored by a fixed red-light speed camera. Maintain strict speed compliance and come to a complete stop behind the solid white stop line on yellow/red signals.
Indicate left early, turn left into Hall Street, and enter the Service NSW car park at walking pace (< 10 km/h). Park squarely into your nominated testing bay, select Park, firmly apply the handbrake, switch off the ignition, and wait for your examiner's debrief.
Most Common St Marys Test Fail Locations
| Location | Critical Hazard | How to Avoid Failing |
|---|---|---|
| Queen St & Station Precinct | High-density pedestrian crossings & buses | Cover your brake, approach slowly, and yield completely to waiting pedestrians. |
| Mamre Rd (Our Lady of the Rosary) | 40 km/h school zone & red-light speed camera | Watch your speedometer closely; stop fully behind the stop line on amber/red. |
| Parkin Rd & Leonard St | Narrow street & continuous double lines | Keep speed under 40 km/h; take wide, square turns without cutting lines. |
| Queen Street Commercial Strip | Cars reverse parallel parking | Do not overtake into oncoming traffic; stop smoothly and wait. |
| Service NSW Car Park | Pedestrian foot-traffic & moving vehicles | Drive under 10 km/h, perform a full 360 scan, and reverse park on arrival. |
